AADS Stands with the Nicholas School of the Environment Against Anti-Asian Racist Vandalism on Duke’s Campus

As stated in our previous statement from March 27, 2020, we are dismayed by the national and global rise of anti-Asian racism, violence and hate crimes in the wake of COVID-19 harking back to past histories. Today, it is with heavy hearts that we must call out yet another incident of racist vandalism on our very own campus: defacing of a mural in the Levine Science Research Center (LSRC) building with anti-Asian images and words. The incident has been reported to Duke Police.

AADS strongly condemns all forms of fear-based bigotry and hate that target any community or individual.

We would like to extend a word of gratitude to Dean Steelman of the Nicholas School of the Environment for her swift response calling out the incident and for her strong statement of support and solidarity with the Asian/American community.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to AADS to report or discuss any incidents you have experienced on or off campus: dukeaasp@duke.edu

These are challenging times for all of us. Remember the importance of relying on science and facts, not myths, biases, scapegoating, and fears.

Also, do not forget to wash your hands, wear a mask, practice social distancing, and be kind to yourself and to one another.

This too shall pass.

In solidarity,

AADS
